Nana’s sofrito is a homemade traditional condiment that is made using the best of organic vegetables and Herbs. Ingredients includes peppers, cilantro, garlic and other greens. Sofrito has its origins deeply rooted in Puerto Rican culture. Nana’s Sofrito is my revised version of my family’s sofrito.
What is Sofrito and how did it come to be?
Sofrito “pronounced Soh-phree-taw” (long vowels) is a blend of vegetables and fruits that is used to add exceptional flavoring and healthy seasoning to your Food. This condiment is used to season beans, meats, and rice’s, and when
blended correctly can be used as a dip (Sofrito varies in its meaning, depending on what country it comes from).
All this to say that Sofrito is not just “Sofrito”. Sofrito is the art of its name and its rooted culture that is shared and passed from generation to generation.
Nana’s Sofrito is the representation of my family’s Sofrito whose roots are found in beautiful Puerto Rico. When my grandparents immigrated to the States, they brought Sofrito with them and kept the traditional alive by making sofrito to enhance their cooking. As a child I remember going to my grandmother’s house and watching her make Sofrito. She always made enough for her children to take home with them. The supply and the beautiful aroma would last several weeks. When the Sofrito was close to finishing it was back to grandmas for a new supply. It’s these memories that inspired me to create Nana’s Sofrito. I take pride in knowing that I can implement a healthier Sofrito to add to our tradition and share with others.
The root word of Sofrito is believed to have originated in the 1300’s. During this period Sofrito was not a created condiment that was cooked with, instead it was described as a style of cooking. Typically, a slow method of sauté and stir fry. Over the course of time Sofrito developed into and acquired a new meaning; something other than the sautéed item.
Over the course of time Sofrito began to transform culturally with the creation of combined herbs and select vegetables; new forms of taste began to take place. Sofrito carried a meaning of its own for the country that it represented within the Latin and Caribbean cultures. Puerto Rican Sofrito is not identified in the same way as Sofrito made from other Hispanic and Latin American countries.
